Blast from the Past: Vintage Trolley Cars Arrive in San Diego
San Diego, CA - Two post-war PCC Trolley cars arrived in San Diego today from Lake Tahoe. It is planned for these cars to become a permanent part of downtown San Diego's trolley service beginning in 2008. The Metropolitian Transit System (MTS) approved a plan earlier this year to create a non-profit subsidiary to acquire two vintage trolley cars, similar is style and appearance to the PCC cars that operated in San Diego between 1936 - 1949.
San Diego Vintage Trolley, Inc., a nonproft subsidary of MTS, plans to restore the vintage trolley cars to their original operating condition and run them on the downtown loop. SDVTI will use voluntary labor and funding from public, private, and in-kind donations to restore the cars and paint them in the same style as the San Diego cars of the 1930's and 40's.
"We have great plans for these cars," said Harry Mathis, chairman of SDVTI. "San Diego has a rich tradition of trolley service and these vintage cars will allow our riders a sense of the past as they marvel at the wonders of downtown's present and future."
The idea to bring vintage trolley cars to San Diego was first proposed in 1983 and again in 1994. A decade later, the project is finally coming to fruition and will be known as the "Silver Line." Estimated completion of the project is early 2008.
SDVTI is seeking donations, volunteers, and pledges of support to help with the restoration of the trolley cars. For information about this project, call 619.231.1466 or visit www.sdcommute.com
